Flathead Fishing Hat

The ambush specialist

Flathead are masters of the lie.

Buried in sand, sitting motionless along drop-offs, drains and shallow flats, waiting for the moment a bait or lure drifts just a little too close.

Then it happens in an instant; a sharp thump, a puff of sand, and the rod loads up.

The Lizard celebrates one of Australia's most iconic estuary species. From drifting soft plastics across sandy flats to working drains on the run-out tide, flathead fishing is a ritual for anglers along the coast.

Where to chase flathead in Australia

Flathead are one of the most widely distributed fish in the country. Dusky flathead dominate the east coast estuaries; bluespot, southern bluespot and other species cover the south and west.

Sydney, the Hawkesbury and the Central Coast are dusky flathead heartland. Big breeders show up on the flats from spring through autumn.

The Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond and Clarence systems in northern NSW deliver dusky flathead year-round in the lower estuaries.

Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are loaded with flathead on the sand flats and along the channel edges.

Victorian and Tasmanian estuaries hold bluespot and southern bluespot through the warmer months.

South Australian and Western Australian sand flats have their own resident populations across multiple species.

What makes a good flathead fishing cap

Estuary days mean long drifts, sun bouncing off shallow water, and hours scanning sandbanks for the telltale outline of a fish on the bottom. The cap has to keep glare down so you can actually see what you're casting at.

The Lizard is built with vintage-washed cotton and a breathable mesh back. The curved brim cuts surface glare; the mesh keeps you cool on summer flats.
