Dolphin fish, mahi mahi or dorado to many (Coryphaena hippurus), are one of the ocean's great opportunists. Brilliantly coloured, fast-growing, and built for speed and aggression.

They hunt in packs around floating debris, weed lines and current edges, smashing bait schools and chasing lures with reckless commitment.

The Bull celebrates one of the most exciting pelagic species you'll find off the Australian coast and the offshore sessions where they show up out of nowhere.

Where to chase mahi mahi in Australia

Mahi mahi are a warm-water pelagic. They show up from northern NSW all the way up around the top and back down to the WA coast, with the best sessions linked to current pushes and floating structure.

The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast deliver good mahi from late spring through summer when the warm current pushes south.

Northern NSW from the Tweed down to Coffs Harbour fires through summer and into autumn, particularly around current lines and weed beds.

FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) systems off NSW and Queensland are mahi magnets. Check your state's FAD program for current locations.

Far North Queensland and the Coral Sea hold them year-round.

Western Australia's Exmouth and Ningaloo produce mahi as a regular pelagic by-catch when chasing other species.
