The fish everyone loves to hate

The European carp has earned plenty of nicknames across Australia. None more famous than the Mud Marlin.

Introduced, invasive, and frequently maligned, carp have also become one of the most accessible sport fish in the country. They pull hard, eat almost anything, and grow to genuinely impressive sizes in inland waters.

Plenty of anglers won't admit it, but a big carp on light gear is a serious fight. The Mud Marlin owns that nickname proudly.

Where to chase carp in Australia

Carp dominate freshwater systems across southern Australia, particularly the Murray-Darling Basin. Note that in most jurisdictions carp are a noxious species; check local regulations on capture and release (many states require you don't release them alive).

The Murray-Darling system is carp territory. The Murray, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan, Darling and all major tributaries are loaded.

Victorian rivers and lakes including the Goulburn, Loddon and Yarra all hold strong carp populations.

NSW farm dams, lakes and irrigation channels are often stacked with fish. Good water for kids learning to fish, and easy access from most regional centres.

SA's lower lakes and the Coorong system hold significant numbers, particularly during high water years.

Note: WA has strict biosecurity and carp aren't established there. NT and FNQ aren't carp country.

What makes a good cap for carp fishing

Carp fishing tends to be long, patient, sedentary. Hours sitting on a bank, watching float tips or rod tips, in changing light. The cap has to be comfortable enough that you forget you're wearing it.
