I'll be straight with you: the bull shark cap started as a half-joke. Who makes a cap for a fish nobody's bragging about at the ramp? But the more anglers we talked to, the more it made sense. If you fish rivers or estuaries anywhere in Australia, bull sharks are part of your world whether you invited them or not.
Anyone who's had a good fish disappear in a boil halfway back to the boat knows the feeling. You didn't see it. You know exactly what it was.
That's really what the bull shark cap is about. Not targeting them — just tipping the hat to the thing that actually runs the joint.
The Fish That Turns Up Everywhere
Bull sharks are one of the very few sharks that genuinely don't care whether the water's salt or fresh. That's why they turn up in places that surprise people: well up rivers, in canal estates, cruising a sandbank in a metre of murky water. We've written before about how at home they are in the Brisbane River, and the Brissie is hardly the only system where they've set up shop.
Rivers, estuaries, sandbanks, even freshwater reaches — they cover more ground than almost anything else with fins. Which is probably why they've quietly become a bit of a mascot for anglers who do their fishing in dirty water: the tough sessions, the tide that never quite does what the app promised, the swirl behind your lure you'd rather not think about.
Dirty Water Fishing Is Its Own Thing
River and estuary fishing is rarely postcard stuff. It's mud, snags, run-out tides and long stretches of nothing punctuated by ten seconds of chaos.
