Threadfin salmon (king threadfin Polydactylus macrochir and blue threadfin Eleutheronema tetradactylum) are one of the most sought-after estuary fish in northern Australia.

Where to chase threadfin salmon in Australia
Threadfin are a tropical and subtropical species, found from the mid-Queensland coast all the way up around the top and down to the central WA coast. They prefer brackish estuaries, river mouths, mangrove systems and tidal flats; often pushing well upstream of the salt wedge on big tides.
The Brisbane River holds a strong population of threadfin, particularly through the lower reaches and around the Port of Brisbane.
South-east Queensland rivers and estuaries from the Logan up to the Mary all produce threadfin through the warmer months.
Central Queensland from Gladstone to Mackay is threadfin country, with the Fitzroy River system being particularly famous.
Far North Queensland rivers and creeks deliver threadfin alongside barra throughout the year.
The Top End and Kimberley hold strong populations in the tidal reaches of the Daly, Adelaide, Mary, Roper and Fitzroy rivers.
What makes a good cap for threadfin fishing
Threadfin water is hot, humid and often tannin-stained. Long sessions under tropical sun in tidal rivers, sometimes from the bank, often from a tinny in tight country.
