Where to chase yellowtail kingfish in Australia

Yellowtail kingfish range from southern Queensland down through NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, with strong populations along the WA coast as well. They concentrate around structure: reefs, FADs, wrecks, headlands and deepwater wharves.

Sydney Harbour, the Hawkesbury and Pittwater are famous kingfish water year-round. The biggest fish often come from the deepwater wharves and reefs around Middle Head.

The Central Coast, Newcastle and Port Stephens deliver consistent kingfish on offshore reefs and the inshore FAD systems.

Sapphire Coast, Bermagui and Eden hold quality kingfish through summer and autumn.

Victorian Wilsons Promontory, the Bass Strait islands and reefs off Phillip Island deliver big southern-stock fish through summer.

Tasmanian east coast from St Helens to Eaglehawk Neck has produced trophy-class kingfish in recent years as populations have moved south.

Western Australia's Rottnest Island and Perth Canyon deliver yellowtail kingfish on deepwater jigs.
