Mangrove jacks are tropical and subtropical fish, ranging from the mid-north coast of NSW all the way up around the top and down to the central WA coast. They live around structure: mangroves, rock bars, snags, jetty pilings, bridges.
South-east Queensland from the Tweed to the Sunshine Coast is jack heartland. The Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond, Logan, Brisbane, Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers all hold them.
Central Queensland rivers and estuaries from Bundaberg to Mackay have thick populations, often in skinny snag-filled creeks where you're casting at a postcard-sized window of water.
Far North Queensland from Townsville up to the Daintree delivers wild jacks in genuinely remote estuary systems.
