Lizard Fish Fishing Hat

The fish nobody chases

The Grinner features an embroidered lizard fish. The fish no one's chasing, and everyone knows.

They'll eat anything. Plastics, baits, lures, occasionally other fish that got there first. They sit on the bottom looking ridiculous, with that wide flat head and a smile full of teeth, and they hit hard enough to make you think you've hooked something more serious.

Every Australian angler has caught one. Most have caught several in a session when they were after something else. The Grinner is the cap for that experience.

Where to find lizard fish in Australia

Lizard fish (Saurida and Synodus species) are coastal opportunists found around most of the Australian coastline. They're a regular by-catch when targeting other species.

Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast grounds are loaded with grinners. Drop a soft plastic on a sandbank and you'll get one within a few casts.

Sydney offshore and the Central Coast deliver lizard fish on reef edges and sand patches; they're a particular pain when you're trying to drift baits for snapper.

Northern NSW and Southern Queensland beach systems hold them along the surf zone, often hooked while chasing tailor or whiting.

Far North Queensland sand flats and reef edges hold the larger species; you'll find them while looking for trevally or queenfish.

What makes a good cap for "everything else" fishing

Long days drifting reefs, casting plastics, sitting on sandbanks; the cap that handles real fishing is the cap that handles the fish you weren't expecting.

The Grinner is built with vintage-washed cotton and a breathable mesh back. The curved brim cuts glare during the long stretches of by-catch fishing before the target species shows up.
