Where to chase Murray cod in Australia

Murray cod are found across the Murray-Darling Basin, which covers parts of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT. The closed season runs September to November in most states to protect spawning fish.

The Murray River from the Snowy headwaters down to Mildura is classic cod country. Big fish hide in deep timber and along undercut banks.

The Murrumbidgee, the Darling and the Macquarie all hold trophy fish, with the bigger water producing the biggest cod.

The Macintyre between Yetman and Goondiwindi is one of the most underrated stretches in the country for surface fishing on dusk.

The impoundments; Copeton, Windamere, Burrendong, Cataract; are home to legitimate metre-plus fish and are open all year.
