On the Water with Outfished: South West Rocks Fishing Charters

Scott Bishop

We started Outfished to make caps for people who actually fish — so there's nothing we love more than seeing one out on the water, doing the job it was built for. This one came back from the crew at South West Rocks Fishing Charters, and it was too good not to share.

Have a look: a cracking pink snapper, landed off South West Rocks on the NSW mid-north coast — and the bloke holding it is wearing The Knobby, our snapper cap. A snapper cap, on a snapper charter, holding a snapper. It doesn't get much more on-brand than that.

Why South West Rocks is a cracker

If you've never wet a line at South West Rocks, put it on the list. It's one of the genuinely great fishing towns on the NSW coast, and there's a reason charters out of here stay busy.

Just offshore sits Fish Rock — a pinnacle that rises sharply out of 30-odd metres of water, sitting right in the current that sweeps the headland. It holds kingfish year-round and is about as fishy a piece of structure as you'll find on the coast. Work the reefs and you're into snapper, pearl perch, teraglin, mulloway and nannygai; in the warmer months the blue water switches on for marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and the odd wahoo. As a rough guide, the mackerel and game fish fire up January to May, while snapper and kingfish hit their straps from autumn through spring — which is exactly when a fish like this one comes over the side.

And if the swell's up, the Macleay River estuary right there is loaded with flathead, bream, whiting, mulloway and mangrove jack. Hard place to have a bad day.

Tip of the cap to the crew

Huge thanks to South West Rocks Fishing Charters for repping Outfished out on the water — and for sending this one through. If you're heading to that stretch of coast, give them a follow at @south_west_rocks_charters or book a trip at southwestrocksfishcharters.com.au. Tell 'em Outfished sent you.

This is the start of something

This is the first in a series we're calling On the Water with Outfished. We're getting caps onto charter crews around the country — the people who live on the water and know it better than anyone — and featuring their catches right here.

Run a charter? Or got a mate who does? Get in touch. We'd love to get an Outfished cap on your crew and put your captures front and centre.

In the meantime, if you want the cap that just outfished a snapper at its own game — that's The Knobby, our snapper cap. Grab one and go find your fish.

Tight lines,
Scott
